                        1. Match the Sun's Power

                          13.Sep.07, 02:17 IST

Match the sun's power with cheap clothes and sunblock

If you saw my "nekked" body, you wouldn't see tan lines. That doesn't mean I'm a nude sunbather. It also doesn't mean I don't go to the beach. In fact, this summer I went to the beach for many ocean swims and played in the sand on Fire Island last weekend. But this pale lady of Northern European descent honored the sun, respected its ultraviolet rays, and matched its power with cheap clothes and sunblock. Consistently. I am very proud of myself.

So now everyone is invited to my skincare lifestyle party, even followers of Miss Coco Chanel (who hit the French Rivera in the '20s to get a deep tan and, according to Renmembi, introduced the tan to the fashion world as a stamp of wealth and leisure). If you are a person with dark skin and don't sunburn easily, you are still risking skin damage from sun exposure. Play it safe with me, and keep yourself protected from the sun.

At the beach, I wear an old shirt with a collar and long sleeves with long pants. (I do, and as a fashion-trend leader, I must say, it's a good look!) I slather my hands, face, and neck with the a surfer's best friend, waterproof and sweat-proof Bullfrog Sunblock: The Quikgel SPF 36, and wear a long-sleeved rash guard in the water. A rash guard (another friend of surfers) is a tight-fitting shirt that is UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rated — for example, a UPF 50 rating means that the material allows only one-fiftieth of the UV radiation to the skin. A darker color means more protection.

When summer ends, my diligence does not. The sun continues to bear down in the noon hours in the city, so the quest for coverage must continue. I'll make the transition to Neutrogena UVA/UVB Sunblock Lotion for my face, forearms, and hands. The lotion goes on thickly and powder-white at first, but you can rub it in, and rub it in some more. It moisturizes deeply along with providing dense coverage. That should do it, and you heard it from me first, but if you want more information on skin care to prevent cancer, the Mayo Clinic and CNN tell all.
